Welcome!
Drums
Julian Carpenter got his start in the school band in 7th grade then went on to play in different ensembles in Massachusetts and abroad, including the North Shore All Stars which perform at the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival. He has diverse experience from playing in Musical Pit Bands to small jazz combos/wedding type gigs. He has studied with Matt Burwell, Steve Johns, Winard Harper, Steve langone, Larry Finn, Ricardo Monzon and Henrique De Almeida. This summer he attended Berklee’s Five Week summer program and received a 20k per year scholarship.
Composition
Julian prides himself most in his composing ability. Starting with a passion for film scoring in seventh grade, he has now written, arranged, directed, and conducted for jazz combos, big bands, chamber orchestra, choir, and is also a songwriter/lyricist. His duo, Shades of November, with Australian Vocalist Chloë Marshal released their first single in November.
Keyboards
Julian always wanted to play drums from a young age, but instead was encouraged to start his musical career playing piano at the age of five, which helped develop his ear and musicality more than most young drummers. As his love of composition grew, he continued learning theory and technique and soon became proficient as a jazz pianist. He now plays piano in small ensembles in the Boston area and finds that he is called to perform almost as frequently on piano as he is on drums.
Vocals
After teaching himself to beatbox and joining the school’s a capella group, Julian began to see his voice as a necessary addition to his musical abilities. He sought classical training to expand both his technique and vocal range. He recently won second place in the American Protege Contest and performed at Carnegie Hall in New York in December 2018.
Julian Carpenter recently toured Northern Italy and Switzerland with his high school's big band.
